August 8th,
2009 is the ninetieth birthday of
Boris Ieremievich Verkin
an outstanding
scientist, inspirer and organizer of science, the founder of the Institute of
Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of NAS of Ukraine and the director for
28 years running (1960-1988).Boris
Ieremievich Verkin was known as a prominent physicist-experimentalist, an
excellent pedagogue of high educational and enlightening standards, but most of
all, as an outstanding organizer of science. This precious B.I. Verkin’s gift
combining deep understanding of physics, intuition, prevision and purposefulness
was fully devoted to creation of a unique scientific center known at present as
the Institute of Low Temperature Physics and Engineering. At that time there was
hardly a person who could conceive to full extent what new quantum phenomena and
engineering potentialities were kept concealed in the region of low and superlow
temperatures. The Institute was built to explore this region. But the Institute
does not mean only a building. First of all, there were people and their
activities that formed the Institute. B.I. Verkin possessed the highest
intellectual faculty of finding and attracting people. His personal charm,
enthusiastic ideas and wisely formulated scientific goals were really catching.
He formed a team of talented adherents and supporters who he could rely on in
pursuing scientific objects. B.I. Verkin developed a creative and friendly
concord and collaboration of physicists, mathematicians and designers who
together carried out research and put scientific results into practice.
B.I. Verkin has
contributed significantly and amply to development of the basic fields of low
temperature physics of condensed matter, such as electronic properties of normal
metals, superconductivity, magnetism, properties of cryocrystals, quantum
crystals and quantum liquids, structure and mechanical properties of materials,
molecular biophysics, physics and engineering at superlow temperatures. He
initiated and developed wide-range low temperature applications in instrument
making industries. The scientific trends chosen by B.I. Verkin have been
progressing successfully till now.
Conference is organised by B.Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of NAS of Ukraine
