Arnold M. KOSEVICH (7.07 1928 - 10.03 2006)

Arnold M. Kosevich, Dr.Ph, Dr.Sc (Phys.-Math.), Professor, Associated member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, winner of the Ukraine State Prize.

A.M. Kosevich was born on July 7, 1928 in Tulchin. Graduated from Kharkov University in 1951. Postgraduate training in Kharkov University (1951 - 1954). Dr. Ph - 1954, Dr. Sci (Physics and Mathematics) - 1964, Professor - 1966.

In 1954 - 1957 he worked at Chernovtsy University and 1957 - 1974 - senior researcher and head of laboratory at Kharkov Institute for Physics and Technology. Since 1974 - head of theoretical department at the B.Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The main scientific works concern the theoretical physics of the condensed matter, namely, electron theory of metals, dynamics of crystal lattice, theory of dislocations and point defects in solids, nonlinear dynamics of magnetization in magnetically ordered crystals.

A.M. Kosevich jointly with Prof. I.M. Lifshits determined a quantitative relation between the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the shape of the Fermy surface for electron gas in metals (Lifshits - Kosevich formula). A.M. Kosevich is a co-author of the discovery Phenomena of oscillations of thermodynamical and kinetic properties of solid films due to a change if the film thickness.

A.M. Kosevich is an author of more than 200 scientific papers and nine books among which there are "Foundation of crystal lattice mechanics", Moscow, 1972 (in Russian); "Dislocations in the theory of elasticity", Kiev, 1978; "Nonlinear waves of magnetization. Dynamic and topological solitons", Kiev, 1983; (jointly with B. Ivanov and A. Kovalev in Russian); "Introduction in nonlinear physical mechanics", Kiev, 1989 (jointly with A. Kovalev in Russian); "Reversible crystal Plasticity", AIP Press, New York, 1994 (jointly with V. Boyko and R. Garber).
